Feeling Lazy
The bad part is that I haven't been riding that much lately, of course I walk up and down the hill on campus about 10 times a day and that is starting to take it's toll!
The football and soccer kids are here now, so campus has a bit more life. I saw one kid roll out of here on a road bike- hmm maybe a new riding partner. Still trying to feel out the trails over this way, so anyone that knows the trails of North Bridgton, ME- let me know!
That's it for now. Maybe a race report tomorrow- we'll have to see.

2008 24 Hours of Great Glen
I had an opportunity to pre-ride sections of the course a few days before the race and some of it was so bad that they were actually removed from the race course. Unfortunately the rain didn't let up until the day of the race. We were spared getting rained on during the race however.
DEA and I set up camp in the solo area and A1 set up his RV compound in the main camping area. All three of us were at the back of the pack when the Le Mans start having decided that we did not want to get too caught up in the mess that happens when the race starts and all the racers bunch up and actually end up walking due to the congestion that happens on course. We thought it might be better to hang back and let things work themselves out before we ended up in the middle of it all. We were not racing on teams and doing the solo thing so the race was a lot more than a lap or two at a time; a marathon, not a sprint.
We rode the first 3 laps together and DEA and I decided to pit and recharge with some fluids and food. A1 was being supported by his wife and powered along. DEA and I did another lap and took another break and got some real food. It was about this time I think that DEA was starting to have some cramping issues. I was feeling pretty good and was riding at my own pace. While eating in the main tent, the timing board actually showed A1, myself and DEA running 1,2,3 in the Solo Singlespeed category. It was cool to see, but unfortunately was not long lived.
After eating, DEA and I headed out for another lap, Lap #5 at this point. It was about 6PM or so and the light was starting to be an issue, it would be the last lap without lights. DEA was having some major cramping issues and as we came int the start/finish area he headed to the pits for the night. He was very disappointed and perplexed as to why he was having these issues. I got my lights set up and headed out.
By this time it was dark in the woods and was getting even slicker than it was before. I was rolling along thinking I would complete this lap (#6) and do 2 more before taking a longer break and get a bit of sleep maybe. I was half way through my lap and was in a singletrack section known as "Whiplash." This is a trail that I have ridden many many times in both directions and know it pretty well. For the first 5 laps I had ridden most of it except for a couple of short sections that were just about unrideable. Well the 6th lap would be different, as I came into a spot that I had been riding all day I came over a large granite boulder and and my front wheel came down it was a few inches to the wrong side and stopped rolling. My weight started to shift forward. I could see that the front wheel was not rolling but was becoming a pivot and the bike I was on was starting to go up and I was about to go over the bars. I know that most anyone who has crashed anything, be it a bike or on skis, or anything else has those moments where everything slows down and its sort of a slow motion type of crash, but you are stuck knowing whats about to happen and can not do anything bout it. I was having one of those crashes.
Unfortunately the ground was not nice soft loam, it was a granite rock garden with a foot and a half of sloppy mud. I hit head first. Actually directly on my head. I could feel as my head went under the water (well muddy black slurry of a liquid). It then hit bottom as my neck absorbed the impact that was not taken by the helmet. The rest of me kept moving forward and slammed into the sloppy rocks. I was under water when I came to a stop. I quickly did a quick damage assessment. I had a some pain in my left elbow, but I knew that I had not fractured or dislocated it again. My shoulder seemed to be OK and all I could tell was that my right leg had some cuts of some sort.
I got up and saw that I could not see. My whole head had a layer of sludge on it and I wear contacts. I was afraid to open my eyes and then not be able to see at all. I opened them slowly and was able to see that my light was still on my head but not near as bright as before. I got out of the middle of the trail and walked about 20 yards. I needed to get my eyes cleaned a but better but my hands were like the rest of me, covered in an ooze. I took the nozzle from my camelback in one hand and with my left hand I pressed on the back of the pack trying to make an eyewash. I squirted my face and eyes as well as I could. I shook my head as I tried to clean it off. I had nothing to wipe off with.
I then wiped off my light as well as I could and then walked the rest of this section of trail. My neck was starting to get sore and I could tell that I had some good cuts on my legs. I was also starting to get a bit cold as I was soaked. I kept moving along, but my confidence was gone and I was just trying to make it back to camp at this point. I ended up waling a fair amount of the lap but got back to camp at about 8:45PM.
As I rolled into camp DEA was sitting there talking with Ward Solar. I walked up and they could see that I was a mess. I was muddy, and I stunk. I decided that with the way I felt I was done for the night. I stripped down, took a shower and got cleaned up. DEA and I broke out a beer and called it a night. I surveyed my bike and it looked like it did a lot better than I did in the crash. I then looked at my helmet. I wanted to see if my HID light was trashed. Lucky for me it looked like it got some scratches but no major impacts. About 2 1/2 inches from where the light was mounted however, my helmet was showing some signs of damage.
I could see that It had hit hard and as I inspected closer I could see that it was broken. The internal frame of the helmet had fractured and was done. I guess it did its job, but this helmet had been on its last ride. It reconfirmed my decision to hit the sack.
At about 6AM I woke up and started to move around. My left elbow was very sore, as its the one I dislocated and fractured last summer. My right leg was pretty banged up and my neck was very sore. DEA was stirring at the same time and we went over to the main tent to get some breakfast and see how A1 was doing. After eating and talking with some folks for a while we headed back to camp seeing that A1 was actually leading the Solo SS category but had someone close behind him.
I think both of us were waiting for the other to say lets go and ride for a bit. At about 9AM we rolled out. I was currently in 4th place and DEA was in 5th. I knew that I had no chance at 3rd as I was 4 laps down at that point. We hit the trails and each of us were trying to see how it was going to go as we each had our own issues. For the first 2 laps we rode together with each of us feeling better in sections and not as good in others. As we pitted to begin the 3rd lap of the morning, I ate some more and refilled my water bottle. DEA who was a lap down headed out about 5 minutes before I did. I was about 11:20 and I knew that there was only time for one more lap so there was no real hurry on the final lap.
I decided to take it a bit easier ans I was stiffening up some. I could see DEA off in front of me from time to time but decided that there was no point in trying to chase him down. I came across a couple of people I knew and rolled along with them for a bit as I made my way around the sloppy, muddy, messy course. I was about halfway through the lap when I heard the cannon go off signalling that the race was over. I was about a half hour away from the line at that point and made it safely in.
I was pretty spent as I crossed the line. It was a relief to finish but a disappointmnt as well. Without that crash, maybe I could have been top 3, who knows. I ended up in 4th place wih 9 total laps. DEA was 5th with 8 laps. A1 did us both proud as he placed first with 16 Solo Singlespeed Laps.

Rain
So I haven't really touched the bike since last weekend. I went for a short road spin on Monday with my mother and then a short spin on Tuesday with my daughter for the weekly series- but nothing to see if I could actually pedal fast. Maybe tomorrow morning.
I don't have a great deal to report. I'm settling into the new job- but I can't say I have a great routine down just yet. Soon.
Today we're going over to the Conway house to try and do a "final clean", I don't think it will be a final clean- but it will get it alot further then it is now.
Alright- still need to go pull bike crap out of the car from last weekend- mmmmm that should smell good!

Ugh
On a very high note- A1 took the top step in the Solo Single Speed. Last year he said he wanted to make the podium this year, I have to admit that I wasn't sure if we would- then he goes and won the whole thing! The kid is stupid strong and his wife made damn sure he finished what he set out to do- 16 laps in hellish conditions. Hats off the A1- he may need to be kicked out of TWAF as there is no way anyone will ever believe he is Weak and Feeble!
JJ had a good race, in other words no trip to the ER. He did fall down and bump his head (LOL) I'll let him explain. But he put in a 9 lap effort.
I on the other hand spent more time in camp then on course. Not sure what the issue was but I was cramping in ways that just wasn't fun. I ended with 8 laps and that was only because JJ nursed me around for a couple laps in the morning to get my legs spinning again. I had been fully prepared to finish with 6 and call it a year.
The course- well it had a touch of mud on it. Kinda like Ricco having a "touch" of EPO in his system. It will be interesting to see if the course ever dries out, and when it does- what does it look like.
Not much else to report at the moment- just tired and the legs feel a bit off today (wonder why). Time to get back to work.

Converting the Dos Niner to SS
Then I put the Surley Singulator on as my chain tensioner. It is pretty slick. I think I should be able to swap out rear wheels with different size cogs and not have to deal with chain length issues.
Hollister State Park, NY
I got about 2:25 worth of riding in and saw a pretty cool lightening strike that hit a big tree. Amazing power, wouldn't have wanted to be close by when it hit. Ouch.
If you ever find yourself in Wester NY, check out this park for a good ride or a good xc-ski int he winter.

Busy times
On the riding front I've been trying to ramp up for 24HOGG, which of course is only less then two weeks away. Got out for a good couple hours with JJ this past weekend and have been logging some time on the road bike. I'm still in rough shape for a solo shot- but I'm hoping the years of riding a bike and years on the 24 hour course will help me be very efficient and maybe sneak in a few extra laps that my fitness might otherwise not allow.
Tonight is the GGTOC summer race series race. I think I'll run gears tonight but am planning on running SS next week just to get at least one race in on the SS before 24. I had originally wanted to run gears thinking it would make me more competitive in the expert field- nope- sitting in 6th without much of a chance to move up unless I look for 18th generation EPO.
I have to say I'm glad the tour is over- it always sucks up WAY to much of my life! I was glad Carlos won, he's sort of the last of the Armstrong era GC guys that had never won- and he seems like a good guy. So far no doping scandal with him so that is good! I don't know what it is but Cadel just bugs me. I remember when he raced on dirt for Cannondale he always had an attitude that I just didn't understand. I think it is that he just doesn't seem Aussie tough- if that makes any sense. You look at Stuey or Robbie and they seem like the guys that you grab a beer with and then if someone mouths off then deck the SOB and get back to the beer- Cadel seems like he'd get into a slap fight and then call for his bald headed body guard to finish off the fight. I don't know but when you're from Australia I just expect more. Cadel seems more like he's French, like a Christoph Moreau.
Ok that's enough out of me- back to packing. Speaking of packing- anyone want any Team Weak and Feeble T-shirts- I'll make you a screaming deal.

Pinhoti Trail, N. Georgia
While on vacation in the South I got out for a ride in the mountains of North Georgia. I found some maps online for what looked like a nice looking trail called the Pinhoti Trail. It runds for some 25+ miles point to point.
After about 3/4 a mile of going straight up it leveled off and stared to be a little more hospitable to my cooked legs. I must say that being a rider from New England does not prepare you for riding in the heat and humidity of Georgia in July. It was killing me and I was going through water like I was in the desert.

I almost crashed when I was heading down one of the fun descents when I saw something that looked like a babyhead in the trail and it was actually a turtle. I had to stop and take a picture. Never expected to see a turtle mid trail on top of a mountain in Georgia.

As you can see there was not much besides up and down.
This was my attempt at shooting some video while riding.
Sorry if you watched it. I rode through a big spiderweb and almost crashed while doing that. That'll teach me to keep both hands on the bars.
I wish I had more tome to explore the trails in this area as it is close to where the Cohutta 100 is held. Good thing they run that in April.
Someday I'll make it back with more time to ride.
Ride on.

Red Jersey Summer Race Series
A field of close to 70 riders showed up for the 6pm start on a course that is about as pancake flat as you can get up in the White Mountains. Each lap maybe had 25 feet of total elevation gain and loss- maybe. A bit different then what many of my Team Bikeman.com teammates were getting ready to tackle over at Mount Snow for nationals!
I raced in the expert vets so we had four laps of the two-mile course. To describe the course, it’s very flat, very twisty, full of roots and baby heads and in may places very narrow. Passing in the first half mile is next to impossible, then you have a short window of opportunity before you dunk back into very tight single track, then you pop back out onto a long straight with great passing opportunity before heading back into the darkest section of single track I think you can ride on a day with plenty of sunshine. After that you get onto another wide-open dragway good for passing before hitting another 1/8th of mile stretch of twisty single track followed by fairly open terrain back to the start finish.
It’s a fun course and you can ride as fast as you dare. I always find it’s not my legs but my nerves and shoulders that get beat up as I’m not the best bike handler at times! I raced my Salsa Mamasita with the Mavic C29’s and X9 drive train and a Rock Shock Reba up front. The bike ran great and I was pleased with how the bike as a hard tail dealt with the roots. I do think I’ll kick down for a Moots Ti post (which is what I run on my Salsa El Mariachi SS and I love it!) at some point in the near future to “soften” that back end of the bike even a touch more.
It was pretty warm out and I was enjoying the summer weight Team Bikeman.com jersey. Add all the vents in the Lazer helmet and I was pretty comfortable despite the mid July heat.
The race kicked off and I had made a determination to try and hit the first single track at the tail end of the fast group. I managed to do that but then heard my name getting called followed by on your left- which normally is fine- but there wasn’t any room on my left- nor my right for that matter- but Sam bulled his way by and then promptly had to jump on his breaks as I was right on the wheel of the guy in front of me. I eased up a bit to let Sam in, then he dumped it on a hard left hander in the sand- so I passed him again but KNEW he’d be trying to get by me again- which made me a bit nervous. Sam is a great kid and strong as an ox, someday he’ll be a good racer, but right now he’s still a bull in a china shop and I knew I was likely to be the china. I could hear him coming up behind me again passing people and likely putting them into the trees as he did- and when he got up behind I told him to hang on for a second as we were about to hit the first open space and I’d let him by. We came out into the open I pulled to the right to give him a clear shot but he had already made up his mind he was going before I moved meaning that he was farther left then he needed to be- we’ll I wasn’t the china but the small pine tree that he completely ran over (he stayed upright somehow) didn’t fair so well. Needless to say I was glad he was in front of me as now I could relax a bit and just ride my race.
At this point I hooked in with another rider and we had a good rythem going, I was faster in the open and he was faster in the woods so a bit of a gap would open and then I’d close it down. Soon we were joined and then we were hauling around the course.
I was really enjoying the race and my handling started to improve as I got to know all the corners and roots. I actually wouldn’t have minded if the race ran a few more laps as my legs and lungs felt great. As we came into the final lap I put in a bit of an effort and got by a handful of people and rolled in with a place yet to be posted (off the podium, that I do know). The race was won by Austin Orth who also took third this past weekend at Newton’s Revenge- nice ride Austin!
A good time and a good workout to develop a bit of leg speed and handling skills as we get closer and closer to the 24 Hours of Great Glen in less then a month.
Next race in the series will be at Cranmore in August.

A bit faster
Went faster then last week so that was good, cleaned a section at race pace that I wanted to and then completely blew a line on Whiplash that caused me to run for a bit. But got back on and rode well after that.
I'm having a weird vibration coming out the ass end of the Mamasita (that just sound funny) under heavy braking. Need to figure that out as it is load and annoying. At first I thought it was the QR touching the chain stay but I changed the orientation and that didn't solve the issue. Bolts all seem tight- and it's a metalic vibration so I'm at a bit of a loss. It must have something to do with the pads and then the vibration is being resonated through the frame- hmmmm, any thoughts?
Anyway, after the race Howie and I headed up the switchbacks and then out a new section of single track (that could be really sweet- but needs a bit of work right now so stay tuned on that), a girl that works up at GGTOC came with us- Megan (a super strong rider) so we made our way along the trail- some walking, some riding and lots of bugs. We let Megan ride through as I wanted to see Howie tackle a particular section of trail, after which we hear this awful crashing sound followed by a "I'm stuck!"- we run up the trail and find Megan completely upside down in a small ravine- her foot stuck under her seat post and seat- not sure how to explain but the seat, seat post and log created a "hole" that her foot was in. I got her unstuck while Howie took a picture! (I'll try to get a copy of the picture). Amazingly she was ok- I think it freaked her out a bit- as it should have as she fell a long way! She's a tough kid and riding strong so keep you're eyes peeled for Meghan Skidmore's name in results!
Needless to say this piece of single track will not be in the 24 hour race this year- but may be in the future with some work- there is some great terrain out there just needs some massaging.
That's it for now.

24 Hours
Of course there has been a bit of a reason for me being a bit off my game. This coming Friday will be my last day at Glen Group, I am leaving to take on a new challenge over at Bridgton Academy- pretty much same job title, but very different environments and challenges. This has been a long process to get this deal done (several months) but it has been a good process. We (my family and I) will be actually living on campus in a house that sits right on top of the hill with the athletic fields as our back yard- pretty sweet. So we'll be renting our house in Center Conway (anyone interested let me know!). Big changes and something I'm really excited about but it has made the past couple of months a bit tough to stay focused on the bike. That being said I raced bikes for BA back in the late 80's early 90's (cycling used to be a school sport with a school boy league in Maine) and my old cycling coach still works there- so maybe I can get him to lean on me a bit and whip me back into shape!
That's it for today. Racing tonight up at GGTOC for the Importech Summer Series, so that should be fun (high amount of pain for a short amount of time).
That's my story- rest day at the Tour- time to catch our breath and start dreams of CVV standing on the podium in Paris!

Good Gravel Grind
Had moments where I felt great and moments where I didn't feel so good. I was grooving to music the whole time and enjoyed the ride.
It did make me think about the fact that I need to do that same ride about 8 or 9 more times to pull about 15 laps at 24HOGG. Ughhh. So that's the game plan safe number- 12 laps (want my 100 miles) and my goal number is 15. Not sure where 15 came from other then A1 rode 14 last year!
Today dealing with some showers and maybe even a few bolts of lightning. Now I need to go check Velo to see who's winning.

On a positive note- CVV is riding strong- that is cool. I hope he can ride a top five tour- that would be fantastic for him and Garmin.
Wow, I'm actually watching the Tour, and digging it- that's a good sign.

HOORAY FOR THE DOCTOR. It's about time you lawless bunch of crayolas get what you deserve! There are several of us current and former La Habra Heights residents ready, willing and able to testify on behalf of the doctor. YOU DON'T OWN THE STREETS, don't follow the law and are a blight on society. You have no care for any living being even yourselves! What I saw before I moved on my own street should make you ashamed of yourselves but you're not because you are all lawless, arrogant idiots...... .......Just like the bike racer I saw one day flying down my street, downhill, on a 660' blind corner WITH A BABY IN A BABY SEAT ON THE BACK OF HIS BIKE! I hope you all get hit by cars!!!
This makes me sick. I understand there are stupid cyclists out there, in fact I almost took out a kid on a BMX today when I was driving to the bank- came out of a drive way never looking and launching the curb- just about nailed him. It was his fault, he was stupid- but I'm still damn glad I didn't hit him! The idea that some nut job is cheering that two riders got FUBAR'd and is hoping all riders get hit makes me want to puke. I just don't get it.
This rant isn't even close to being over- and I really hope the Dr. spends some time in jail.

Got up this morning for a little 5:30am shake out of the legs, spun for just over an hour. It felt good to get the junk out of the legs, although there were a few times I was upping the pace beyond a good relaxing pace, oh well. I guess A1 had called me last night to see if I wanted to go this AM- so we were on the same page, but I never got the message (I guess I should go listen now). I think A1 is under the same thinking that I am- time to get off our asses and start riding for real with 24 less then a month away!

The TT is going on right now- hmmm, wonder who will pull it off. I would have a hard time betting against the big swiss TT machine, but you just never know. I did see that someone what topping out over 50mph on a false flat- WTF!!! That's fast.
Racing tonight on the Mamasita, I think I've gotten that a bit more dialed- we shall see.
Flying the Bikeman colors tonight- hopefully I'll do them proud.

80's flashback

I'm not sure what it was, maybe it was left over from PowderJew's birthday party- but I had a jones to listen to Michael Jackson yesterday. I didn't have any in my collection and my copy of Thriller that I had on tape I'm sure got tossed out years ago.
I actually remember buying that tape. Bought it at the Maine Mall, I think the store was called Deorseys (spelling??) I remember coming back to the car and wanting so badly to listed to it but my Dad told me that he wouldn't play that crap in his car. Oh well. Needless to say that was a day or two ago.
So last night I was on my machine when the urge came over me again, so I went to iTunes and bought Thriller once again, this time for $7.99. Ahhhh, yes what quality music. Now I need to weave it into a playlist that I ride to and then I will dominate the world.

What is it about this season?
1) no major goal for the season. I've been into cycling for a great many years- and in reality this year I'm riding a fair amount- just not the levels that we had ridden the past few years. Jay really changed me as a rider in terms of my expectations for myself. Last year I had my first attempt as a 24 hour solo rider, and while not nearly the level of motivation that I had for Jay, it was still enough to get me out of bed early.
2) pro-cycling has lost its luster. The Tour starts this weekend and I don't really care. I have to say that the last time I felt that way was before LeMond started appearing on the podium in France- so that's well over 20 years of loving the Tour and having a sense of excitement every July. Between Floyd getting tossed, Astana not getting invited and the UCI and ASO acting like kids fighting over a toy I've just lost my appetite. The sad part was I wasn't even that motivated to enjoy the Classics this year. Part of that may also be the fact that all my favorite riders are either retired, at the end of their careers or on the sidelines due to doping charges. Maybe I need to get excited about some of the young guns out there.
3) I bought a new TV last winter. That's right, I'll actually admit this in a public forum. I have become a bonafide TV junkie, if it's in HD I'll plant my ass and watch it. I need to change that, and quick!
4) Not sure- but I'm sure I'll come up with something else soon!
There is my line of thinking. That being said had a great ride with JJ and Chris on Sunday that ended with an impressive downpour. I've sold two bikes, meaning I'll be ordering a new Kona Jake the Snake cross frame to build up for the fall season (now 'cross season is something I'm fired up for!)
That's about it. Ride on.

Maybe saying goodbye to....
The M2 has been with me for a long time. It was my first high end mountain bike, and we've had some fantastic adventures together over the years. I can actually remember when I got it, I was working at the Skirack in Vermont and I bought two- one for my wife and one for myself on Pro-deal and I remember the rep working with me on the part spec. Actually to date I still haven't spent as much money on a single bike, the prodeal on the bike was $2672.28. Why I remember that was that I bought my wife's engagement ring soon after and I thought it was funny that I spent more on the bike then on her ring. As a side note- she no longer has that ring (well she has the ring but has lost the diamond) but she still has her bike! That may be why I've held on to mine as well- sentimental reasons. But now I don't ride it, it sits in third position when it comes to my mountain bikes and just doesn't get the love. It now is built up as a SS with a rigid fork and most of the riding it sees in towing Emma around on the trail-a-bike. The bike does that very well, but I have to say it wants to get back on the trails and rail around on single track.
The other bike is the Jake the Snake- which I got as a used bike and have since become completely hooked on cross racing. We've been through some good races but it has always been a bit off in terms of fit. The saving grace is I plan on replacing it with another Jake- just a larger size.
So there is my roll down memory lane for this morning. Get out and ride- and Blue- I hope things are drying out!

A Good Way To Start The Day
We met up a bit past 7:30 and began our pedal. Normally the commute via the road takes around 25-30 minutes with not a whole lot of effort. Dirt doubles that and this morning I was feeling it, but in a good way.
We hit the trails that connect from Pine Tree over to Stritch, then pavement to Sears, rail to powerline, powerline to sticks and stones, pavement into town. Got that?
Anyway it was a good ride, I'm awake (although I am drinking coffee) and it was good to get out and ride with JJ.
Last night I chatted with A1 who had just got done riding the spin bike- I let you make your own comments.
24 Hours of Great Glen is only two months away. That scares me a bit, or it relaxes me- I'm not sure which!
Anyway time to get to work. Ride on.

Red Jersey Summer Race Series, Race #1

The course was reletively non-technical but had a fair amount of climbing per lap. Each lap was about 2.7 miles long and started out going straight up right from the start line. My class was doing three laps and so I was pacing myself for the first climb trying to turn as large a gear as I could and keep from going into the red. I turned my first lap in about 17 minutes. There was not really many spots where you could open it up due to the climbing or the amount of rooty sections as the entire race is set in an old pine forest. At a certain point you just cannot maintain a line or sem to keep the bike on the ground.

Once I finished my first lap I had a better idea on how to ride the next two laps. I rode the initial climb as hard as I could and figured I could try to recover afterwards. I was riding in a pack of 3 other riders and we were all moving to the front and then getting passed but no one was getting dropped. I finished my second lap in about 16 minutes.

For my last lap I tried to climb the first hill as fast as I could. Two ot the three other riders stayed with me as we lost one who was out of gas. At the top of the climb I tried to grab my water bottle and almost tipped over and the other tow guys passed me. AS we continued around the last lap they were able to get about a 50 yard gap on me. As we entered the last 1/4 mile stretch it is pretty flat except for the roots. I decided I would try to make a mad dash for the line with about 200 yards to go and pass the two other guys with 50 yards or so to the line hoping they would not see me coming and not be able to react quick enough. I was pushing my big ring as hard as I could and my strategy ended up working out as I slipped by and across the line in front of the other two guys. I ended up finishing in just about 48 minutes.
It was a fun race and nice way to start off the summer season. After a turkey wrap from Matty B's it was time for awards. As the called the places for third and then second I realized I had placed first. It was a cool beginning of the season to hop onto the top spot of the podium. Hope to repeat it again in the coming weeks but also realized I have much wok to do to get ready for the 24 Hours of Great Glen in August.

Good fathers day
Spent some time watching the Meet the Press special, Russert was always a favorite of mine- and it is hard be believe he is gone. Whoever assumes his chair has some big shoes to fill.
Then watched footage of the floods- Blue, I hope you are doing ok! We're thinking of you here in the east.
Last night I found myself watching WAYYYYY to much TV- US Open, Dauphine, and then NBA finals. I should hook my TV up the trainer and only watch as long as I can keep the thing powered up!
That's if from here. Wet week coming our way- so we'll keep the 'skeeters well fed.

Good weekend of riding
Sunday morning came a bit quicker then I had hoped. My plan had been to get up early and do some work to the Mamasita, but best laid plans often fall apart.
The continget of riders- JJ and I. We headed out (both running gears and suspension- oh my!). The day's temps were slated to get up into the 90's and the early morning "cool" wasn't staying cool for too long. We rolled through Pine Tree, then the trails over to Stritch, 302 to Sears and from that point we stayed on trails for the next couple of hours. It was good to get out and try to ride sort of fast, of course I was dreading what I knew lay ahead- the Cranmore Access Road. I was still running a 2x9 and a 32x32 on a 29'er still isn't very low. I don't know why a 32x20 seems find for climbing on the SS but when you run gears you expect to have a gear that will work.
Needless to say on the climb JJ rode away and it wasn't long before I was walking in shame. That is untill I saw JJ walking in shame as well. Maybe a granny gear isn't such a bad thing! Or maybe having 25% of the miles in my legs that I usually have this time of year is a bad thing- it's one or the other!
We got to the top and I was starting to feel pretty whooped. The temps were up and I was blasting through my water. I had enough to get back to town, but that was only because I wasn't drinking the rest right then and there. The rip down Red Tail was excellent. I felt pretty good, there were a few bobbles that put my heart in my throat, but for the most part we kept the downhill speed in check.
We rolled the lower section, saw a couple riding up and then ran into PeteO at the water tower- he was heading up as well. I would have loved to see how he rides up that thing- as he is one strong and fast rider (last years 24HOGG solo champ).
Next stop was Sids in town to reload on water and for me a coke and JJ a redbull. I'm not sure the temp at that point- but damn it was hot.
We rolled home via the powerline and then fast tracked it back on the pavement. I was struggling pretty hard at the end- basically staring at JJ's backside and just trying to hold his wheel. There was a sprint for the line- mine was very feeble and JJ won easily. From that point it was just survival getting home as temps had crossed into the mid 90's and I was pretty much melting. It was good to be done, it was good to run cold water on my head, it was good that the cramps didn't kick in until I had showered and was laying on the couch.
Thanks to JJ for towing my slowing butt home and can't wait to do it again!

The ride was inside of 4 hours which was good since we'd both be in the dog house if we were out any longer. Ended up with a rolling time of a little over 3 hours, about 26 and a half miles with about 3000 feet of climbing.
Works out to about 3 laps at the 24 hour race. Boy am I in trouble.

Ok onto a more uplifting topic- ride this weekend? Who's up for a good one? Thinking about the loop around from Ctr Conway, Freyburg, Trail 19, HMR, Red Tail, SS, SideHill, PowerLine, Rec, home.
Leave at 6am be back by 9ish to 10ish.

Cedar Creek
We also met two other guys out on the trail, so we had a good group and it was fun.
I had one of my best rides down the descent at the mineral site, and I have to say- I was freakin flying (and I'll also so it won't happen again as i scared myself) but I had a guy riding an Ellsworth Truth behind me and I was hell bent to stay in front on my rigid SS- I did and it was fun and I hope I can ride that way again- but I might back it off from the edge a bit in the future as I came close a couple times to stacking hard.
A1 was out and riding well- but he needs to put Ergon's on the new ride- the round grips on a rigid SS just don't cut it when you've bombing downhill. As always A1 was killing everyone when the trail went up- ahhh to be 19 again!
That's it from here. Jason left a note (last years 24HOGG SS Solo winner) that he's thinking about a fixed gear team this year- yikes! I'm doing some research to see if it's been done- hmmmmm.
It's June by the way.

Here kitty kitty
How can a nice kitty like this be an issue:
That being said a mountain lion would be a different story, and while no sightings have taken place near our house, there have been some in the greater Mount Washington Valley.
This Kitty would tweak me out:

Considering the luck my dogs have had out in Davis Hill (Molly- two trips to the vet from Porkupine and Jake one trip due to a Porkupine, and then Molly's mystery attack/injury that left her side sliced wide open) I would be more nervous about one of them tangling with a bobcat- but I'm hoping that the two of them would be able to at least make a bobcat think twice about messing with one of them- and yes I'm thinking the cat would be smarter then the two dogs combined.
So that's it for me. Getting out on the bike this weekend- I hope!

three good days of riding
In all though it was good to get out and ride in the woods. Word of caution, it's tick season. I pulled off a few each day, and the dogs picked up few as well (so a post ride groom is always called for).
That's it from here. Hope to get out again soon.

Not really bike related, but...
We parked the car and as I was getting my stuff together my phone rang.. It was DEA asking if I wanted to go for a ride. I said I would, but I was walking towards Fenway Park in Boston. Its not too often to get an offer for tickets to Fenway to see a Sox game so you take em when you can get em, particulary these seats.
After a quick bite and a few Bass Ales we went inside Fenway and the game started.
It was a cool evening with a pretty good breeze. The Sox were playing well and put a few early runs on the board against the KC Royals. In the middle of of the 4th inning I leaned over to my buddy and said, "do you know what's happening?" He looked at me with a look that he knew what I was referring too.
So as the innins went by we saw some great defense and even better pitching by John Lester. As we hit the inth inning and the no-no was in tact everyone was on their feet. It was crazy. I cannot believe I saw it. I was at a No-Hitter. Pretty rare thing to witness. Wow. Not abike ride but a great eveing just the same. See ya on the trails.

Ride with Mike
Michelin Mike and I headed out for a ride after work- me on the Mamasita and him on his Pugsly. Let's talk about the Pugsly first- damn that is a crazy looking bike. The wheels are so huge and the dish on the wheels is just nuts, that and the width of the BB is just crazy.
Rolling it makes a noise that sounds like a large truck rolling up on you, and in the woods it spooked me a couple times (of course there were only a couple times I was in front- but more on that in a minute). So we rolled out on the pavement and I'm looking at this beast of a bike and I was pretty comfortable with the idea of having to wait for him on a regular basis. Then of course we rolled onto the trail and I quickly starting falling behind- oh and then there was a bridge- so I walked.
Soon we were rolling along and I was getting pissed that I couldn't easily keep up. We then hit sticks and stones and he just started riding away. Of course he's just chatting away and I've got my heart in my throat and can't come close to speaking. I was trying to figure out why I was slow- so I kept looking down at my bike trying to see if something was rubbing, or if the brakes were engaged- or something- to no avail. Then I realized we were actually riding quite fast and it was just that he was hauling (at least in my view).
It was great to get out and hammer for a bit. We then rode the Pudding Pond trail and there are a number of new bridges- kudos to those who did the work. After that we rode the backside of Sticks and Stones and then jammed the traverse (the climb was the only place I actually was able to stay ahead of Mike- I think the 30 lbs difference in bike weight had something to do with that!)
After that we parted ways and I rode home, exploring the trails off of Stritch road and then the trails between Mudgett and Mill Street. In all almost two hours of riding after work combined with the 40 minutes in the morning- gotta love "commuting".

Crank the Kanc
This meant we had to stage cars at the top as the wives wouldn't be waiting for us up top. I drove up early and was picked up by JJ and Susan- all I'm going to say is that ride back down was rather exciting- i think Susan was in a hurry.
I met up with K at the school and we did the registration thing and realized we had almost two hours until our start time- we came very close to going to McD's for a bit of breakfast- and it wasn't common sense that stopped us- it was laziness as I didn't feel like loading the bikes back into the truck to make the run. Now that is pathetic!
I got to cheer on K, JJ and Susan at the start but A1 and Nikki were starting behind me. My biggest fear was that Nikki would catch me. I wasn't sure what my game plan was if she had but it did entail fabricated excuses and maybe even some self inflicted road rash to sure up the story- but that never had to come to pass.
The course is 21 miles, 17 of flat to slightly rising and then 4 straight up. The first 17 I felt pretty good. I didn't run aero bars but did end up laying out on the bars a fair amount as the headwind was kicking up. I think next year running bars may be in the cards. I rode pretty well out to the climb, the amazing thing was how fast the people that passed me passed me- that was a bit of a wake up call!
On the climb itself I cracked and just went nowhere fast. I even ended up getting cold- I'm not sure if I went a bit to hard on the first 17 or if it was the fact it was my first real climb of the season (now that was smart!)- but I just had no power or pop going up. In the past my small gear has been a 39x23 and I would climb much of the climb in a 39x21- sort of like the whole single speed thing- you tend to go uphill faster when that's what you've got for a gear. This year I was running a 36x26 and I was using it a lot and you just don't go uphill fast in gear that small.
Needless to say I was happy to see the top and not so happy to see my time. I had hoped to "ride it" in a 1:30 but ended up with a 1:33:27- so I've got some improvements I've got to make for next year.
javascript:void(0)
K had a good ride, putting in a 1:54:31. She wanted to be under 2 hours and she did so with time to spare. I think she actually enjoyed it! Of course I give her credit for the improved weather as she spent a pile of money on snivel gear for the race- just in case.
Yesterday took the dogs out for a recovery ride on the Davis Hill trails- it was good to get out there. Rode the Mamasita- still a few things to tinker with on that but I'm going to like that bike- just need to get used to riding gears and suspension again.
So that's the story.
Get out and ride.

Getting spanked on the Kanc
The concern all week leading up the to race was the weather. Well it was one of my concerns, besides being way out of shape. It looked like it was going to rain pretty hard and be in the low 40's. Quite a combo that could also mean some snow at the top. As Friday night rolled around, the Red Sox game was a rain out and the radar looked like the forecasts were spot on. When we got up early Saturday morning we were pleasantly surprised that it had not rained, yet. As I was loading the car with the bikes it started to sprinkle. I figure, "here it comes." It was already about 50 degrees so that was nice.
We staged a car at the top of the climb as we had a little league game immediately after the race to get to and at the top it was dry and about 48 degrees. We headed back to registration and got our stuff ready to go as it started clearing. As we waited for the race to commence the sun started to appear and we all started to wonder if we were overdressed. By the race start for me I was down to a jersey, bibs and arm warmers.
The weather turned out to be fantastic. Mid 60's and sunny. Although there was a descent head wind at times. It must have been significantly stronger for me that other people though.

Overall the race was the same as it usually is, 21.3 miles of up hill fun. The first ten are a constant climb gaining about a thousand feet of elevation. The middle section is a little flatter where over the next 6+ miles you gain about 200 feet. Then you hit the wall of the final climb. 4.8 miles where you gain over 1,500 feet. There are no flats or places to rest. Well there are rest areas and scenic vistas, but if you stop you might not decide to get back on the bike again.
I felt OK during the ride, notice I'm not calling it a race anymore. I was looking for a time around an hour thirty. I was a few minutes off pace when I hit the final climb. No doubt due to the poddy stop I needed to make on the way. Problem was I did not have enough in the tank to make up any real time on the climb. As a result I chugged along working to try to catch people in front of me and not let too many people pass me. Not that I could do anything about a fast guy coming past me if I wanted too.
I think one of the most disappointing things to see is when you are on the last climb and starting to wonder why you are doing this foolish event you start seeing the people who stared before you ripping down the mountain at 40+ mph, not even bothering to say hello, or good job or even a nod of the head. The last 5 miles can be a lonely ride.
I rolled across the line and was worn out. My back was starting to tighten and both calves were also getting crampy. It was good it was not any longer. I finished but 7 minutes off my last solo time so that was a disappointment. Regardless it was a nice day for a bike ride. Hopefully next year I can get more bike time in before the race and fare better. Congrats to everyone who raced. See ya on the trails.

Then on Sunday K and I got out for a good spin. It was the maiden voyage with the new SRAM kit on the road bike- very nice. Shifts smooooooth and even without the front trim adjustment I wasn't getting any rub. So far so good. I really like the hoods on the levers- very comfortable.
I was able to commute in this morning, so maybe I can sneak in a few extra miles after work. Saturday will be interesting to say the least!

In other news, at work we're working on an event to promote the TechVillage and it's sort of interesting as we are building the event with feedback from those who are looking to participate- should be an interesting concept.
We're also still having the commuting conversation here- Blue- we need some representation from Iowa, especially those who commute by jet!
Hopefully we'll ride this weekend- although Ward is trying to talk me into skiing the snowfields and maybe aiplane on Sunday (Mothers Day- that should go over well) any other interest?

In other bike related news, I got in an early morning spin with my wife but I had left my road bike at work so I rode the new Dos Niner on pave as Sue rode her road bike. Made it a bit more work but it was a good ride to get some setup issues worked out.
Hopefully the great weather we had today will hold out this week and dry things out.
